goes round

and round

like the earth

around the sun

or is it

the other way around?

R ever wanted

was a proud spine,

aint like they

who got one

gonna miss a slice,

trick is

never ask

for love

while you're

on your knees.

Now all

anyone'll remember

is flammable paint thinner

and the semiautomatic revolver

he brandished

like a scepter,

not his royal fire

his to and fro apostolic strut

and street-corner gospels,

not his soul stitched to his face in flames,

no, they'll remember

the sacrilege up his nose

all the minstrel halos

yanked out of scorched sleeves,

they'll remember Freddy's,

the stink of human torches

burning in a discounted Hades—

not his shadow

reciting scripture with praise,

his mind stuffed with waves

of sloshing flammable hate juice,

not that after twenty years

on 125th Street,

his street,

his soul drowned in diluvium waters

because it was winter

and God

soaked his furnace

and braided his telephone wires

into a crown of fire.
